'Eavy Metal from White Dwarf 113

If you ready yesterday's post about Marauder Miniatures, you will know that we are currently exploring the Warhammer releases from White Dwarf 113. And for an issue that saw the release of Space Hulk, there are very few shots of terminators to be found within the pages of the magazine.

There are a great deal of other things floating about though, and those models will be of interest to any old school enthusiast. Lets have a look at what was on offer in this issue, shall we?

The new Imperial Knights get a page to themselves, with most of the Orders getting a model sitting astride those gorgeously painted plastic horses. Hiding in the bottom right, are some pre-release chaos squats. Very nice! Note, you can see a tiny picture of friend to Realm of Chaos 80s, Andy Craig, bottom centre in the painter's portraits.
The second page has genestealers aplenty, and the look of these models is going to send Chico finally around the bend! These are lovely, lovely models, and the hybrid numbered 13 was on display at the Foundry last weekend. In truth, the photography cannot replicate the quality of the colours and the painting. You really have to see these models with you own eyes. Note: There are some Confrontation gangers here too, I am not sure if these were on general sale but that can raise a hefty price tag these days in the collecting world.
The forthcoming Heroquest gets a page to its own. These were (presumably) the metal master casts for the later plastic models. Note: the dwarf, barbarian and skeleton are different sculpts to those that were in the box! Anyone know why? Mike McVey begins to show his mettle with these beautiful models.
Bloodbowl 'Big 'Uns', Rogue Trader Orks in Heavy Armour and an early Imperial Guard Scout Walker. Random chaos squat thrown in there too, as you do!
More of Pete Taylor's massive chaos collection is chronicled, including more of his conversions. If anyone knows where Peter is these days, please do drop us an email here at Realm of Chaos 80s, as we would love to talk to him about his involvement in the '80s Warhammer Scene!
More of Peter Taylor's stuff, including an in game shot. Yes, that really is five odd Lord of Changes on one battlefield!!
Next time, something rather special. Especially of you are a fan of Gary Chalk's artwork!

  2. I've never owned this particular issue, so this is of great interest. I know it's been said a million times before, but the miniatures and painting in modern WDs (not that I've looked in one for a good few years now) leaves me cold. This really was golden age, wasn't it?

As for Gary Chalk: colour me interested! An interview? Or have you acquired a piece of original artwork?

...also did anyone notice that the Imperial General and the wizard from his Retuine on the first page are on the exact same horse? lovely painting on that one in particular...but I founf that rather stange.

    1. 2 of the knights are on the same horse as well, guess they didn't like painting horses ;)

  6. One thing I've noticed about most of the original Realm of Chaos models, particularly the daemons; the painters have used all sorts of colours on models that wouldn't be seen in those colours today. Green lords of change, red and greeny/yellow "pink" horrors, blue keepers of secrets, etc. Its nice to see that they didn't feel constrained by the traditional colours that those daemons were supposed to be (ie. green for nurgle, red for khorne, etc). I find it hard to break away from that mindset when painting my old chaos models.

Also, those Heroquest models are still awesome! Even to this day, I think they beat similar modern minis. I think the Fimir is probably one of my favourites! I'd never known of the Fimir until I got Heroquest.

  7. Fimir hail from the mist shrouded island of Albion........ I would love see a full on Army of them! I always fancied an ally contingent if them and I have to say that I don't think you'd find much that would make a fair few oldhammerers drool more that that prospect.......

Clan Myeri's already in pretty good shape. Still waiting on the master casts of the Marsh Demon models.

Also check out Mr Saturday's blog for some lovely gribbly Fimiring and a search for Dreadaxe should also conjure one-eyed-bog-monster goodness!

  8. Loving this particular post. Some quality painting. I love the differing styles. Every painter seemed to have a different take. And McVey's HeroQuest stuff still blows me away. Probably still my favourite ever Christmas present.

  10. I've been spending some time with my White Dwarf issues from around this time and while all of them have at least a few things to gawk at not all have an eavy metal as good as this one. So many beautiful figures there.

You're surely right about the heroquest figures being metal. I just saw the wizard on ebay last week but didn't check back in to see if it sold and for what.

    1. The genuine, prototype wizard? WOW.

The mystery of Heroquest figures has always intrigued me. They were my first introduction to the hobby. Why did they have integral plastic bases when the same era Space Crusade minis had slottabases?
