Realm of Chaos 80s is very proud to announce that the Foundry have agreed to a second 'Oldhammer Weekend' next summer on the 9th and 10th of August!
With a date on the calendar, the next challenge is to decide what to actually do at the event. I am absolutely certain that I want to design, produce the scenery and figures for, play test and present a narrative scenario for players. I would imagine that this would be a one day battle, that may or may not be possible to run twice on a single day. I have a few ideas knocking around in my mind but we will just have to see.
Marcus Ansell was very keen to repeat the painting competition. Last time, it was something that got mentioned early on and then kind of trailed off into nothing. Despite this, we had a few fantastic entries (and it was wonderful to see them in their own cabinet)! This time, I feel we should make much more of the competition. I see no need of reams and reams of restrictions and rules about what can, or cannot, be entered. I think applicants can judge for themselves what is appropriate. We are, after all, after a miniature that reflects the old school vibes that Oldhammer is all about.
As for a prize, I seriously feel that I can create, or commission someone else to create, an Oldhammer Sword to present to the victor. It will be a real sword, hopefully engraved, but I will not make the investment in such a prize if only a handful of people are interested in entering the event.
So, what next? Well I hope this post will start off a discussion about a number of points. 1) Do you think a painting competition is a good idea/are you interested in entering? 2) If you are able to come what would you like to see going on? 3)Have you got anything in mind that you would personally like to do during the weekend?
I await your comments and ideas with trepidation!

That's great news and I hope to be able to attend this time. I will be entering a painting competition if this happens. I would like to see a mass participation battle; perhaps 6000 points per side with participants each bringing 500-1000 points arch. Grande Melee! Anyway just my 2 cents worth.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I am going to do my best, and make the trip as well. All I am planning on is having a great weekend. I am working on 1000pts Chaos army that I will bring for whatever is planned.
ReplyDeleteI was there in 2013 and had a good time. The standard of painting generally was excellent and the figures in the cabinets was fantastic. Would I like to see a proper painting competition? Probably not... it would be so hard to judge. Give everyone who made a real effort a beer, pat on the back, photo on the blog or whatever. I feel Oldhammer is more about participation and enjoyment rather than winners and losers.
ReplyDeleteThe real highlight for me though was when Tony Hough spontaneously narrated his way through his art collection. It was really interesting hearing him talk about the how where and why of some iconic GW illustrations. More of this kind of thing would be great!
Count me in mate! I'll definitely do my best to be there!! What I would like to see is a bit of Rogue Trader action for the niche that is 40k in the world of Old Hammer! Also maybe a few categories within the comp would be good as I'll be entering RT minis... Perhaps along the lines of the original Golden Daemon way back in the old days!!
ReplyDeleteGiven the great enjoyment I had at this year's Oldhammer event, I definately wish to make it there next year! The Realm of Chaos participation game was a lot of fun, so something similar for next year would be ace. Also, I really would like to do something Rogue Trader related, although whether that be another participation game or some kind of small scenario-driven skirmish game, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteAs for a painting competition, I'd definately find something to enter for that, perhaps even in multiple categories! A sword-trophy is a great idea, but it would be a big personal expense. Prizes would be nice, but perhaps an expensive, engraved sword might be something to consider for another year. Maybe run the 2014 competition again and see how successful it is. Sometimes these things take a few goes to gather momentum and popularity.
Yes, I agree on the sword front Orlygg; I'd save the sword ('Oldhammer Axe'?!) 'til another year until the event gains popularity, which I'm sure it will. Right I'm off to bid on some forest goblins on eBay! Tricksy.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'd be happy for an Old Hammer great of Ale as opposed to an expensive sword ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow about literally an 'old hammer'?
ReplyDeleteWould a game of Advanced Heroquest be welcome?

Delete"Myth 5: Oldhammer is just Warhammer
Any old school game fits, though the games produced during the 1980s by GW do dominate. But I would expect to see games beyond Warhammer (or even Rogue Trader) being played at an Oldhammer Event. Space Hulk (any edition), Blood Bowl, Heroquest, D&D... the list goes on. These games share the concept that the 'game' is a shared experience that cannot simply be 'won'".
Great to hear that this event is planned. I should have a couple of thousand points of 3rd Ed Slann and RG guard ready by then!
ReplyDeleteFerminster hits the nail on the head "I feel Oldhammer is more about participation and enjoyment rather than winners and losers". Painting competitions can be so closely run that judges have to ultimately go on taste to some degree. I think some kind of token for taking part that everyone (who makes a serious effort) gets is more in spirit - a special miniature for instance, we all cherish any free figures we get after all. Having said that there is certainly value in a competition with a prize if you wish to promote an event to a wider audience.
In general I think the idea of a painting event is as vital as the gaming event - Oldhammer is about both aspects of the hobby and the two must go hand in hand. Gaming is the group activity and is it's own reward. Painting is the more difficult most often solo activity, so some kind of prize to focus and motivate participants is not unreasonable and can serve to make participants go the extra mile thereby improving the quality of entrants.
So token of appreciation/participation for every painter who takes part and a limited amount of unique prizes for the favorite paint jobs on the day sounds about the right recipe to me .
Although I have dropped off the scene for the last few months I intend on coming again, I had so much with You, Warlord, Ninja, etc during day one RoC Warbands I would be a fool to miss it, I may enter a new warband but if pushed for time I will just bring this years again :D
