Leadspotting: Was the Pantheon of Chaos Kickstarter any good?

As very long term readers will know, I have been interested in the Pantheon of Chaos project since it was called Antiqus Malleum and was spearheaded by Mick Leach of Eastern Front Games. For some reason I can never quite fathom, the project stalled at the final hurdle, but like phoenix to flame, Diego Serrate and his pals rode to the rescue and have since launched a successful Kickstarter.

But was the final result actually any good? Sure, many a crowdfund has promised the Earth but delivered a tiny piece of Shropshire (and a not very nice piece at that) sending forums and comments pages alight with rage and disappointment.

Thankfully, The Pantheon of Chaos did not descend into farce and I recently received a number of models from the project. Hence, this review and the reason you are now reading this. Perhaps you were tempted by the models on offer, or took the plunge and coughed up the cash? It matters not, as we are here today to review some of the miniatures on offer.

What started as a small project to put together a couple of chaos warriors soon grew into a mammoth undertaking of astonishing proportions. Looking back, it was as if each week Diego and his gibbering, mutated sculptors served up another '80s Warhammer inspired wonder on wonder. There were by the project's end so many different models it was hard to keep track of them all and I capitulated and let the greens wash over my like a tidal wave of tin.

When he was not whipping his sculptors or force feeding them raw meat, Diego engineered one beautiful looking range after the other. Warriors, champions, troops and of course - behemoths! With old school GW stalwarts such as Tony Ackland, Kev Adams and Tim Prow on board too, the results were enough to make a seasoned (and quite blinkered) Citadel collector into chasing something else small and silver.

Speaking with Diego, he has assured me that there is much more to come, including a hardback rulebook to support the range, and a webstore to peddle the models on an individual basis. But that is all in the future, for now we have the initial outlay of models, of which I have a mere handful to examine.

To start with I am going to look at the multi-part models I received in more detail. I have photographed them here with a trusty old 1990 Citadel Bretonnia gunner for scale. All of these models are creatures of chaos and display the crazed proportions of their ilk.

Top left, we have C'Chak the Silent - and be honest I am not quite sure 'what' exactly he is supposed to be. He is certainly fimir like and has a reptilian body. I am not quite sure where to place him in my collection and my opt for him to represent a troglodyte.

Top middle, we have Screech. A beastman type, he has a positive whiff of bat wings about his ears and a baroque style of armour. A scorpion tail completes his chaotic visage.

Bottom left, Kev Adams Scragg hobgoblin champion - beautifully sculpted and similar to some of the larger models he did for the Warmonger range. He is far too large for me to use as a standard goblinoid - so instead he may well become a troll or ogre.

The long headed chap is perhaps the weakest of the models, in my opinion at least. Something about the pose I think just doesn't gel with me and the design doesn't tickle my fancy at all.

Zz'andor is the real ace in the deck here and I love him. An obvious pastiche of Zygor Snake-Arms from the pre-slotta days, only this new version is superior in every way to the original model and the quality of detail is extremely crisp. A stunning model!

Conclusion: A really solid bunch of models. Though the multi-part nature of the miniatures may well put some people off, these just beg to be painted (or if you are daring, converted). The quality of the casting really surprised me, being used to Bryan's Foundry quality of production. These are weighty, crisp models packed with detail. I observed little or no flash on the examples I received and absolutely no miscasting at all.

The single cast models may well appeal to the old school Citadel collector more than the multi-part, so I have separated them in this review. Personally, I prefer my models in this way and I believe that the poise and position of a model is best dictated by a sculptor of some skill and not me and my superglue. Again, the Bretonnian gunner has popped in to offer some scale guidance.

Top left, we have the model I once named Oskar the Writhing and he is a real beauty to hold in the hand. Full of crusty, corroded details he is just shouting out to become a Nurgle champion in my nascent force. You may well remember the two models below him from the Antiqus Malleum days, and again I was pleased to finally have these in my hands. To the right are two beastman models who riff in a different direction than the standard goat man. The lizard headed chap on the top row really caught my eye and his heavy amrour will no doubt paint up beautifully.

Standout model here? Kev Adam's goblin standard bearer. A work of art.

As I said earlier, the Pantheon project became so massive it became difficult to keep track of it all. These little critters (which I understand where handed out as free extras to backers) are very similar to the Famous Familiars of old. They are more chunky than their '80s cousins though, being perhaps more closely related to Kev Adam's late '80s Nurglings. They are varied and interesting. My favourite has to be the fly headed 'thing' on the top of the row.

Conclusion: An excellent set of models that will blend in perfectly with any collection of old school fantasy from the 1980s or later. Special mention must be made of the beastmen as an attempt has made to produce something different from the goathead archetype. The goblin standard bearer is a must for any collector.

Here is a close up of the other two familar things so you can check out the detail and imagination on offer.

Finally, the big boy himself, the Greater Daemon of Malign/Malice/Malal - whatever you want to call him. He is a really large model and weighs a fair whack. Handling him brought a nice smile to my face as it brought back the first time I opened up blisters of the original Greater Daemons of Chaos way back in the 1980s - which I guess is the ultimate accolade I can give any model.

He is multi-part and will require some skill to assemble. Cleaning and greenstuffing will no doubt be essential to get the best out of this model, as well as a fair bit of pinning. To the old school modeller, this isn't going to pose a problem but to though who are perhaps more suited to the CAD plastic (and resin) kits of today, it may feel daunting. I can tell just by looking at the level of detail that when this beast is assembled and ready for painting, he will make a fine centre piece to any army or indeed collection.

Excellent.

Like the single cast models before this gigantic creature, it feels rather smashing to have at last got my hands on this model. From first noticing it in the Realm of Chaos books, to discovering that the now famous Malal daemon was still part of Tony Ackland's art collection and using his warp maddened memory to recreate the pantheon of daemons from this lost god, it has been quite a journey.

Conclusion: Even my wife liked this model and suggested that I got on and painted it so she could see it finished. No miniature could receive higher praise than that!!! (;

Right, all I have to do now is work out which model I am going to work on first. Quite a hard question to answer really, considering that I have a bunch of skaven on the go as I type. Oh, and a few more wizards!

Time to go ponder.

Greenskin Wars!

If you are a fan of Crooked Claw miniatures and are sadly mourning their recent loss from the fantasy wargaming scene, I can bring a swift smile to your face. Diego Serrate has snapped up the rights to the models and is using all the previous sculpts as a basis to a supplement for Dragon Rampant - only with Goblins.

Here's what he had to say to me:

DS: It's a project called Greenskin Wars. I've taken on the (now dead) Crooked Claw Miniatures range  and have reorganised all those incredible models into different goblin factions.  I have also sketched a lot of new models and a whole new faction together with Kev Adams - the Goblinmaster himself!

I must say that Kevin is doing an amazing job here and we have developed a good friendship. He knows exactly what I want from him with just a few instructions or a simple sketch. With the help of another "Kevin" (who's also a big fan of the other Kevin lol ) we are creating a supplement or "army book" to use with the with the Dragon Rampant game system. That will let you create very specific goblin armies for the four main factions we have by now - Hill Goblins , Doom goblins , Feral goblins and Black Goblins.

As with Diego's other Kickstarters - this project funded itself within the first few hours of launch, so there is no risk here of the project stalling. If you are after getting your hands on any of these goblins (and there are a number of other interesting pieces too!) just follow the link below.

I will leave you with a nice gallery of images from the project to whet your goblinoid appetite!

Space Raiders: Kev Adams 80s Space Ork Kickstarter

Hello all! No sooner was I back at the paint station working on a few Nurgle pieces then Diego (Pantheon of Chaos mastermind) dropped me a line about another one of his projects. 80s style Rogue Trader style orks from Kev Adams and others!

The greens you have seen above made my jaw drop and smile at the same time. They are both crisp and modern but seem to step out of an 80s issue of White Dwarf.

But what else would you expect considering the names involved?

The sharp eyed among you may recall a similar project put out by Diego a while back. In fact the painted models you can see above were part of that project if my memory serves me correctly. Those were excellent but these new sculpts surpass them in many ways.

Just look at the design and sculpting prowess in this green below!

Incredible eh? As I said, Kev's new space orks step right out of the glory years of Rogue Trader and beg you to paint their armour red and scrawl 'kil 'kil kil' across it!

Here is a closer inspection of some of the characters available.

Diego explained to me that many of the models you see here have interchangeable parts and so many different combinations are possible. Take a look here for an example.

Then there is the important issue of scale. As you can see from this side by side the measurements are bang on classic 80s Rogue Trader!

There is also a Rogue Trader style Grom the Paunch!

Of course, this being Diego there are plenty of future plans too. I will leave you with a quick glimpse of these before I go.

As we have come to expect from Diego the project is already funded but if you are interested in jumping on board the link is here:

Pantheon of Chaos Kickstarter Goes Live! (and meets it's goal within two hours!!!)

I had a wonderful conversation with Diego Serrate (the visionary behind this project) this morning and congratulated him on the enormous success of his kickstarter. As you will have read, this exciting project was funded very quickly with all of the early-bird deals being snapped up in the first ten minutes alone!

Not that I am surprised at all at the projects's success, considering the quality and range of the figures on offer. Their design really puts some of the more 'professional' companies' work to shame in many respects. If you have been following the project here on Realm of Chaos 80s (and I know that thousands of you have) then you will be wanting the link, won't you?

Well here it is...

I spoke to Diego about his plans for the Kickstarter:

Diego: The goal of our campaign is obviously to produce the starting miniature range, which is already quite large at 54 models - if all of the goals are unlocked! We would also like to gather funds to produce the hardback book later this year, with everything you need for single battle or campaign mode. We hope to include a wealth of other information too, with lots of background, art, bobby articles and a full colour miniatures section.

Looking at gorgeous photographs like this makes we wonder just how good the book Diego mentions would look like!

I has been very rewarding for me to see this project develop. I am sure that many of you will recall the Antiquis Malleum project that I covered some years ago. Sadly, that effort was abandoned by the project founder but luckily, Diego managed to get his hands on the greens and artwork Tony Ackland produced. This means that Matthias Witherheart (remember him?) and his retinue will someday raid across my tabletop!

Diego also sent me a WIP of the final Malal/Malign daemon - based on the hooked horror illustration I blogged about years ago. Other versions of the this model have been produced - though this version is clearly the better sculpt.

So what are you waiting for?

Pantheon of Chaos: Son of Zygor, a Chaos Warrior, Thug and a WIP Beast of Malal

Diego contacted me last Saturday to say he had some more greens to share with you all. Funnily enough, I was just strolling out of Stoke Hall's stableyard as he did so (an exciting mix of old and new there) though it has taken him until now to send things through to me.

And the wait has been more than worth it.

I think what most excites me about this project is the way Diego and the team continuously surprise and amaze me. This time, it was with the incredible Zz'anDor, the son of Zygor, green you can see at the top of the blog post. It is beautifully executed in a style that meshes both old and new.

A 'must have' must have model!

Next up, this fully fledged chaos warrior by Christen. The armour is really in keeping with the older mid '80s models - based on actual suits of armour- with that little twist of evil thrown in. It is easy to miss, so check out the detail on the feet! No boots but malformed toes! A fantastic touch.

Beautiful sculpting shown on the reverse of the model and that fur detail is just screaming out to be painted. I also like the way the cloak resembles flayed skin. Ghoulish!

Christian has also finished work on this female thug. Now there IS a rarity. If you read my blogpost about women in Warhammer you will know that one of my bugbears is a lack of realistic looking female figures in the Games Workshop ranges. This lass looks like she means business and is quite sensibly attired for life in the Chaos Realms. The ornate armour and raised mutated crab claw are nice touches.

Slaanesh anyone?

I think the addition of a hex base really ramps up the look of this particular model - don't you think?

And finally, one you have probably been all waiting for! A WIP of the Beast of Malal concept. Personally, I would have spread the legs out a little bit so the limbs look a little more splayed but I expect that this will be a multi-part model in the end, so we needn't worry.

Repulsive isn't it? In a good way. I have been really impressed by how the Pantheon of Chaos team have managed to capture the horrific creations of Tony Ackland and bring them alive in greenstuff.

More news on this project as we get it!

Pantheon of Chaos: Greater Daemon of Malal Head Update!

Those of you following the Pantheon of Chaos project closely will know about the recent green based on the classic Tony Ackland illustration of a Malal daemon. If you want to know more about the daemonic pantheon that inspired these models - look at my original article here.

As promised by Diego a few days back, this model will come with the alternative head shown here. Comparing the two, I much prefer this version. Those eyes look suitably soulless for my liking.

More news as I get it!

More Excellence from Pantheon of Chaos

You wouldn't fancy meeting these two lads down a dark alley? Though, I am certain the chap on the left buys his ale at our local supermarket. As promised, here is my second post about the goings on over at the Pantheon of Chaos. Diego sent me a load of WIP shots the other day and I am more than a little excited to share them. Time draws near (fingers crossed) to the Kickstarter too, and you can be sure that I shall help spend the news of it's launch when time.

Perhaps you are wondering what the rest of this mutated masterpiece looks like. Well, scroll down to find out...

Sculpted by Diego, this two headed thug reminds me of the famous Realm of Chaos era beastman of similar design. Though the resolution of the photograph is not great, you can see that there is plenty of textural detail on the model, as well as a tiny nod to Nurgle on the mace head. The brace of daggers on the front of the chest are also a nice touch.

Alessio has been working on this armoured chaos hobgoblin recently. Though I am not a fan of the impossibly sized morning star, the baroque chaos armour really floats my boat, so to speak. I love painting the details on the little faces GW's '80s designers adorned on some many a chaos warrior, and it is pleasing to see the trend continue in the 21st.

A mighty nose on him as well!

Speaking of hobgoblins, I think I reported before that Kev Adams has produced a single model for the project, with hopes that he can contribute more in the future. Again, there are the faces, not only one the 'two heads' but all over the armour too.

Diego gave me a little bit of background about this model, and a few of the others.

DS: It represents a chaos hobgoblin champion ready to command the hobgoblins regiment. However, the figure turned out so well that we will write a special character profile for him, probably. The best thing about Kev is that after 30 years the style still there, frozen in time, so it's perfect for a "oldhammer" style project like this.

And having had the pleasure of watching Kev at work, I heartily agree.

DS: This is a Chaos Champion of Fire and was sculpted by Christian (our beastmen guy) and one of the things I like the most about it is the Bob Olley style in the complex armour detail and overall pose. Let me explain a bit aabout the "fire" term. In Pantheon of Chaos the dark gods will be trying to return to the mortal plain by filtering through the very basic elemental forces which affect the natural order of things, like fire and water or even Life & Dead or emotions like Hate or Anger.

DS: This demon was sculpted by me. Following the explanation about the elemental forces and emotions, as you can see this big boy has no eyes. It's called a "war demon" because it can be summoned or just appear in places where a huge slaughter has happened, or is going to happen shortly. The growing concentration of rage and hate of the oppossing forces is what feeds them and serve as a guide for them. They can "smell" these feelings and hunt following that track. The more destruction on the battlefield the more powerful they get.

It seems the more we see of this project, the more exciting things become. Look out for more updates here in the future.

Malignancy of Malal: Fancy fielding a Greater Daemon?

It has been something I have been badgering several people for over the last couple of years, but at last someone has delivered! A full scale Greater Daemon of Malal based on the original concept drawings discovered in Tony Ackland's collection. Pantheon of Chaos have come up trumps again, with Diego Serrate sending me a wealth of material late last night for fans of the project to gawp over.

The Greater Daemon was sculpted by a relatively new addition to the Pantheon, Boris Szuster, and you can see that he has done a great job. The model certainly looks imposing!

Diego went on to stress that the green you see here is a mix between the two drawings we have seen before; the original '80s Ackland original, and the second digital concept Tony produced for the aborted Antiquis Malleum project. Both images have been attached here for your reference. Diego told me that he hopes to produce this model with a choice of heads, and include the a design based on the '80s version too.

No doubt many of you will be contemplating scale. So here is a handy photograph of the new Greater Daemon alongside a plastic Chaos Warrior. By the looks of things, the 'Malal' Greater Daemon is slightly larger than the old '80s metal Daemons and would most likely struggle to fit on a monster base. Not that that matters, of course, unless you are a total scale purist!

Looking at the green from a different angle highlights the beautiful reptilian detail that Szuster has achieved. The hands really strike me as particularly well executed, even unpainted I get a sense of impossibly ancient skin and wrinkled flesh. The face is appropriately baleful too, and the detail on the horns help drawing attention to those blank, soulless eyes.

Finally, I am sure there are those of you out there wondering about casting. Well, here is a handy shot of the all of the model's pieces broken down. If this is cast in metal (which is the Pantheon's plan) the Greater Daemon will be a weighty beast indeed and will feel very, very satisfying in the hand.

If you couldn't guess, I am extremely excited by this model and cannot wait to get to work on my own copy! I have several other exciting pieces to share too, and I will be revealing more of Diego's secrets in another post soon.

If you are new to the Pantheon of Chaos, just follow the link below to find out more. It is a closed Facebook group so you will need to apply to join to uncover the wild and wonderful creations within!

The Malignancy of Malal: A Pantheon of Chaos WIP of a 'Malal Beast'

I saw this when I got home and I just had to share it for all those bloggers who don't frequent Facebook. The Pantheon of Chaos boys are at it again and they have only gone as far as sculpting the suspected 'Beast of Malal' creature.

If you don't recall the image, have a look below, and cast your mind back a couple of years when I worked with Anthony Ackland to recreate the daemonic pantheon of Malal. A number of other websites have now jumped in on this piece of research and are displaying the creatures on their webpages and wikis, but the original article can be found here.

Of course, what those lesser websites don't state is that the Malal pantheon we presented is more conjecture than fact, but nevertheless it gives interested parties something to work with. The famous 'Beast' drawing under discussion was published in the the Lost and the Damned as part of the 'independent daemons' section, and never officially tied to Malal.

Diego Serrate shared a few snaps of this startling sculpt today and, fingers crossed, we will see some of the other creatures from those old concepts created in putty in the not too near future. When, oh when will this kickstart!!!!?

Further information about the Pantheon of Chaos can be found on Facebook. Just follow this link!
