Things that go bump in the night!

I hate it when a paintbrush goes. You know what I mean, don't you? One minute you are painting away, master of the paint's destiny and the next... Splodge! The point of your brush just doesn't want to co-operate and ends up splitting in two!

Arrgggthh!

Then comes that period of scrabbling around for a new brush to work with. Getting used to it's quirks and idiosyncrasies can take time and for a while at least, you lament the old one's loss.

That is where I am at the moment. Perhaps I should say, I am between brushes?

I find speed painting great fun and often urge all and sundry to have a go themselves. Set yourself a time limit and just paint. It is liberating.

These two nasties were born out of the need to change brushes. I knew I'd only get two or three models out of my current one, so snatched from the leadpile two simple figures that could be completed in a few hours. The first is the Old Hag from one of the villagers/townsfolk releases put out in the '80s while the other is the classic reaching Citadel mummy.

The light was as dim today as you would expect in England during February but I managed to capture these nonetheless.

More soon.

  1. I think I remember that old hag from her stint MC'ing the "Tales from the Crypt" comic... As for the Citadel mummy, He's a very similar style to several others of the time, including the one from the "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb" board game. I like the lurchy, loose-bandages look that leaves a lot to the (horrible) imagination.

    1. I have eleven other Citadel mummies - including the example you describe. I was lucky enough to pick them up a few years ago at a wargaming bring and buy for the princely sum of £5. I have always fancied doing a unit of them and this model, bought to replace the single one I traded, was one of those 'what if' paint jobs to get me going in the right direction. But as I say, I dislike painting whole units of anything, even great models like the mummies.

    2. The ones from "Hero Quest" are pretty good too.

    3. Agreed, though they are substantially more 'chunky' than the Citadel ones. I spend many a happy hour with the the Heroquest plastics as a youth. Then again, didn't we all, eh?

  2. I love that hag! Still after one to complete my 3 weird sisters for McDeath.

    1. She reminds me of my Women in Warhammer post. Should we be thankful she isn't dressed in a chainmail bikini?

  3. Use vaseline to coax that brush back into shape. I put a small amount on all of my brushes after each painting session and it really works. I started doing it a few years ago and I haven't had to throw away a brush since.

    1. An interesting tip, and one I shall try. I shall raid the wife's beauty products to see if I can find a tin of the stuff. Thanks.
