Wayne England

I have some sad news to report. Wayne England died suddenly this morning. I am sure all of you will agree that his contribution to the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 (and beyond) was considerable. Thinking back on a lifetime of enthusiasm over his work, the front cover of White Dwarf 110 springs to my mind instantly. An inspiring and iconic image that launched a thousand marine armies in the 1980s.

But then, Wayne England was an inspiring and iconic figure in the gaming industry. He will live on through his astonishing body of work.

Thoughts go to his family at this time.

  1. Very sad. You chose the blog picture well. That's the archetypal Wayne England image for me too.

    1. As I have said many times, one of the all time greatest magazine covers and an ultimate expression of Rogue Trader. A masterpiece.

  3. I am sorry to hear this. His blue and white dwarfes were the inspiration for every dwarf army I have collected since. He will be missed.

    1. I am the same. Think dwarf army and Wayne's seminal work springs to mind. I expect we are just two of many thousands of gamers who do the same.

  5. Wayne's visions of science fiction and fantasy settings will be sorely missed. He was an inspiration to many, through his artwork and his miniatures- and in that way he will continue to live on.
Think of how many hobbyists have one of his illustrated icons as tattoos? I know I've considered it more than once.

    1. I would expect there are a few fans out there fielding ink designs of Wayne's. Anyone want to come forwards?

  7. What an incredible loss, my condolences to his family! He was a key component to making GWS what it was in my/our youth. His work was incredible, I anxiously awaited the next WD to see his and others latest work. Truly sad that we lost such a wonderful artist. He will be missed but not forgotten with the likes of the Oldhammer community.

    1. Looking back, what made Wayne such a special person (apart from his enormous creative talent) was that once you met him and spent some time with him, you felt that you had known him for years. An intelligent, witty man and a fantastic story teller.
