The City of Lead: A Tale of Four Oldhammer Gamers

Hello all! I have managed to paint up a figure, despite my looming return to work. Sometimes I think the long, sprawling days of summer don't help the painting mojo and work can slow to a painful crawl - but this figure seemed to just paint itself over the last few days.

He is the first model in Steve, Paul, Chico and my new ongoing project - The City of Lead: A year long mission to create a warband for Mordheim. Now, I am a complete stranger to the game and have yet to explore the published materials but I have picked a side.

Kislev.

And this Russian looking chap from the recent Foundry 'Time Warp Wizards' will do nicely for my warband.

There are a couple of other possible models in my collection already, but beyond buying up the original Kislev Warhammer models I am stumped as to where to find medieval looking Russian miniatures.

Can any of you readers suggest any ranges?

  2. Man I love Foundry models, they are classy. Nice paint scheme, You should totally get one of the Kislev riders with the nice plumes as your leader!

  3. Is the goal to create a 500 gold crown starting warband or a warband tailored for a one-off match with a higher gold crown allowance? Just curious, since the latter would allow you a freer hand in picking models (for example, mounted heroes) and might be more fun if you're not going to hold a regular campaign.

    1. It has to be a 12 figure Warband (1 figure per month painting challenge) which is brought from the standard 500gc allowance. It is a stand alone game but since it's 4 payers and has to played at a gaming event (BOYL17) in a single afternoon which 2 of the people who has never played before it would be hard going to increase the GC or use optional rules.

    2. Isn't it a bit difficult to fit 12 models into 500 gc for pretty much all warbands except Skaven, Orcs & Goblins and maybe the Undead? A 12 man Kislevite warband consisting of one Captain, one Esaul, two Youths, and 8 Warriors would have 145 gc to spend on equipment, or about 10 gc per warrior and 35 gc for the Captain. For example, the above miniature would be carrying equipment worth at least 40 gold crowns (Light armour 20, Helmet 10, Axe 5, Shortbow 5) and possibly as much as 55 gc (Light armour 20, Helmet 10, Bow 10, Double-handed weapon 15).

    3. Not really, as it's a stand alone there's no real need to worry about taking max Heroes and can happily run with a Captain and 11 Grunts. As for WYSIWYG it only counts for wielded weapons, those slung and armour isn't worried about so the above figure could just be equipped with a Axe if needed. It's 4 friends doing a painting/converting challenge first and foremost and the game is just really an excuse to show off the finish figures off at BOYL17 and have a laugh, so much like my Warband Gnoll's which doesn't have a list it'll be made to fit if needed :).

  4. Middleheim Mordheim figures are well suited as well, check the various historic ranges for Polish Hussars too.

  5. As for suggested ranges, Foundry's Cossacks (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/seven-years-war/cossacks/cossack-collection-bcsywc001/) look like they could provide models with black-powder weapons such as pistols for heroes and handguns for streltsi, while their Dacians and Sarmatians (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/ancients/dacians-sarmatians) might be suitable for common warriors with spears and bows or ferocious champions who prefer fighting bare-breasted with two-handed weapons. Foundry also has plenty of bears, which are a given for any self-respecting Kislevite warband.

They offer Renaissance Poles, Russians and Tatars. Not quite as chunky as Citadel figures, but close enough that I mix and match the Italians with my 1990s RoR/DoW miniatures.
