Realm of Chaos 80s @ Salute 2013

Dan and I made the annual pilgrimage to Salute in the ExCel Centre primarily to invest in armies for a new game system. In the end we choose Saga and two Gripping Beast Warbands; Anglo Danish for me and the Jomsvikings for Dan - who loved the war dogs that came with the box set, and memories of the crushing injuries he inflicted with Mange during our Realm of Chaos campaign sprang to mind.

But such discussions are for another blog.

I also love the SELWG Bring and Buy Sale. Searching through this mass of humanity and war gaming paraphernalia is an absolute joy for a committed leadhead like myself, so into the scrum I ventured to emerge with this.

Starting on the right, two packs of ex-Citadel feudal knights (thanks Marcus!), two carrion, twelve mummies, four witch elves, twelve beastmen, four barbarians and an orc drummer. Nice!

Here's a couple of close ups!

It was a great show, certainly the best yet! And thanks to those of you who stopped Dan and I to talk about this blog, its uncanny how an Oldhammer T Shirt attracts fellow leadheads to the cause.

So then dear readers. Any of you attend the show? Anyone else manage to capture some vintage lead at next to nothing?

Orlygg.

  1. Oh dear, I was there but you must have got to the bring and buy first ;). No vintage haul for me though, mostly Mantic stuff which I'm painting up with a hopefully fun old school feel.

    1. Yes, I saw lots of Manticore stuff. Dan's mates with a few folk from the Chelmsford bunker and we watched a game of Kings of War and Dreadball. Warhammer and Bloodbowl clones in my opinion, though respect to those who want to play that stuff.

  2. Well done! I got four beastmen for a fiver and a squad of 10 beakie marines (inc a couple of metal figs) for a tenner. Well chuffed!

    1. We're those beast men tied on to a strip of cardboard with thread by any chance? If so, they may be the ones I left behind in a large box. I didn't see any beakies but I did see a chaos dwarf tenderiser for a fiver but missed it by seconds!

  3. I was there too, with my daughter, and an album stuffed with old Games Workshop originals: Was on the lookout for new potential clients. We may have passed right by each other!

    1. I was wondering if you would be there Tony. I even had a wad of cash to deprive you of an original too! Unlike when we met last year! Hopefully you can make it to the Foundry Event in the summer!

    2. Darn! In the end I did sell one - the Squats At Work illo from the original attempt at Battlefleet Gothic - to a collector I'd dealt with before. I do intend to be at the Oldhammer event and I'll bring whatever originals I've got left!! Let me know what bits you're interested in via tonyhough2000@yahoo.co.uk

    3. Thanks Tony... I will certainly do that, but first I have to persuade the wife to let me invest in an original. She's got a new driveway, kitchen and conservatory this year, so I am hoping for a Hough original. I reckon having one of your works hanging up in the house will add even more value to the house.

  4. It was with much sadness that, two months ago, I realised that I would be unable to attend Sulute this year (I am currently in East Sussex on holiday). Oh well; there's always next year! Gutted about missing out on hairyscot's beaky boys. I just paid ridiculous wonga for some on eBay last week.

The Saga rules set and Gripping Beast minis sound interesting. I recently purchased the Muskets & Rules set from Studio Tomahawk with the intention of delving into the world of historical. It caters for small war parties of a dozen or so figures battling across the theatre of war known as the French & Indian War. Great stuff!!

    1. Are you thinking of muskets and tomahawks? Yes, dan and I had a quick look at that. Excellent models, as you'd expect from GB. Dan, who primarily plays 40k, was amazed that he got a Warband of 25 miniatures for less than 35 pounds. We are going to make a table for Saga and mess about with scenery too. A dry run for the more ambitious Oldhammer tables we'll make this winter.

  5. Have you had a look at the Lardies rule set, Dux Britinarium? Similar warband size to SAGA but far more based around a campaign setting and aimed at post roman britain. I did a bit of playtesting for it and bought the rules when they came out. Lovely little set with lots of little quirks to reflect the period warfare.

    1. Yes we did look at that game. We wanted something small and cheap to play, so picked Saga. I do like the dark ages for gaming. Very evocative.

  6. Just had a look and, yes, it looks like my beastmen where the ones you turned down, Cheers! As for the Beakies they are going to need stripping. Lots of stripping!

    1. We were probably jostling each other in the scrum and didn't realise it.

  7. Ahh, I feel better now that I know you have to strip your beakies hairyscot ;-)

Yes Orlygg I mean't Muskets & Tomahawks. Dunno what I type sometimes. I love the native indian minis; so evocative. Suppose it would be cheating to put any updates of your progress with your GB minis on this blog!?..

    1. I will do so at some point. They give me a chance to mess around with modern transfers and basing materials. I am also experimenting with army painter.
