C23 Jes Goodwin Ogre: Marauder/Bandit

I took a bit of a break from tiny familiars over the last few days to work on this classic model. Yes, one of the iconic Jes Goodwin ogres that everyone knows and loves. I am sure that you will agree that these are some of the finest models of the 1980s and like the familiars, there is a huge range of character and detail in each figure. In fact, anyone with even a passing interest of old school Citadel models should have a couple of these in their collection.

I am lucky enough to have ten.

Looking back at the lead mountain, I have really squandered these models. They have sat in my draw for many, many years and I really should have doen them the service they deserve a paint them up to make a unit. So alongside the tiny tiny familiars I am going to knock out a couple of these models a week (hopefully) to help preserve my sanity of dealing with the uber fiddly detail on the familiars.

He was a real pleasure to paint if truth be told. The skin was easy to highlight and his character just oozed out as I worked. Drybrushing brought out the furs and his hair and the rest was simply a case of basecoat, highlight and extreme highlight. There are still a couple of things to work on here... but they can wait.

I am just about to depart back to school. So I won't have any further time to work on anything for the next week or so. I help look after key worker children and have to do my week before retreating back into self-isolation again. But I will be back.... stay safe in the meantime everybody.

  1. He looks great! Don't beat yourself up about 'squandering' the ogres. I've an original boxing of Citadel's Adventurers Starter Set BC-1 from the 80's that I've had for at least a decade. Trying to get the nerve up to paint them!

    1. I suppose there is no better time to accept the challenge. Its funny how we can become almost 'frightened' to begin a painting project for a whole number of reasons isn't it? Thanks for the kind words. (:

  2. Superb - and the skin tones in particular! I quite agree that these are some of the best Citadel miniatures. When I was a kid, I had two very minor grumbles about them: one, that they were quite a bit bigger than the second set of Golgfag's ogres, which otherwise were a perfect match for them; and two, that they were *so* characterful that they didn't really all work as a unit. But those were very small grumbles! They're brilliant miniatures.

    There was another wave of these, with the slightly goblinish shaman and the troll-like mutant. I reckon the best ones from the whole range are the slightly more generic types like the marauder, the bounty hunter and the mercenary: 'regular' ogres who could fit in anywhere that there's ogreing to be done!

    1. I agree with your point about the more generic ogres being the most useful of the models. Having used ogres in a wide variety of armies over the years I feel that they are wonderfully characterful troops to field in any fantasy game. In the 80s I have an ogre champion called 'Vomit Breath' and he is one of the few models from this range that I don't currently possess. I suppose I should leave him until last in this project and attemptto recreate him, modern paintjob pending of course! (:

  3. Great job! I just painted one of these (Gutlagg, Executioner) up myself recently. They really are a pleasure to paint!

    1. One of the best of the best is Gutlagg. I am pretty sure I have him somewhere (or certainly did) but I have yet to locate him in the leadpile. I love the way he stands posing with his axe at rest. Somehow I can't imagine him to be the most proficient of executioners! (;

  4. He's a bit good eh? One of the range you don't see painted as much as some of the others.

    1. Thanks Chico. He has copied your haircut though... Perhaps you could copy his nose ring? (;

  5. I have that guy! Got him second hand from someone who used him for Bloodbowl and had cut the club off... I tried a modern club but it didn't look great so I eventually just left it off... which is sad.

    1. Poor ogre... how must they feel without their trusty clubs?

  6. Beautiful! Love the way you paint flesh, it blends shadows and lights really nice. By the way, love to see my favourite blog back!

    1. Thank you Inti... I enjoy painting flesh and always start with it when painting a figure. I have to get the face finished before moving on to the other parts of the figure. I have no idea why I do this... just tradition I guess. But I cannot concentrate on other parts of a figure until this is done. As for the flesh tones, I plan to vary these a little with this project. I am thinking of adding yellow to the mix next time and trying some darker skins tones in future too. These models make the perfect canvas for experimentation.

  7. Glad to see you back Orlygg.
    I have mixed feelings about these ogres as I will explain.
    I think they are great models but many years ago my army of Araby, featuring figures from the Mad Mulla Ackland Regiment of Renown, supplemented by various arabic figures from Essex miniatures and even an Essex elephant and howdah, met their fate at the hands of Skrag the Slaughterer and his cursed dwarven allies many times! Some of these ogres, as well as Golgfag's regiment were used to defeat my brave army over and over :(
    Great painting though :)

    1. Mighty ogres have crushed your armies into the dirt on many an occasion eh? There can only be one solution to such mental damage - collect the entire range of these models, paint them up and then crush army after army in response!! Trust me, it will be good for you! (:

    2. Alas, my fantasy wargaming days are long behind me. Get to play D&D weekly as much easier to set up but organising a battle is impossible nowadays. Your site brings it all back though :)

  8. Cracking job mate and look forward to the next one. I've still to get the full set but the hunt is the best bit sometimes! The Bounty Hunter is the one I really covet ever since seeing him in an Advanced Heroquest scenario printed in White Dwarf I beleive.

    1. Yes, he is an amazing figure and sadly one I covet too. I recall the fantastic image of him for AHQ too in one of those superb dungeon style dioramas they produced from the game. An undervalued gem is AHQ.... ):

  10. I do love these old classic Jes Ogres. You've done a worthy job on this guy. I've painted a few myself over the years, and what I wouldn't give for a few more of these timeless beauties to paint again...
